1 dead as landslides hit southern Austria after heavy rain

BERLIN (AP) — Austrian authorities declared a civil emergency on Wednesday after some villages in the southern state of Carinthia were cut off by mudslides and flooding following heavy rains. One person was killed and another missing.

Residents of the villages of Treffen and Arriach have been told to seek refuge in the upper floors of their homes, state broadcaster ORF reported.

The Austrian president called on residents of the affected areas to be careful and thanked the rescue teams for their help.

“The destruction…is dramatic. I call on everyone: take care of yourselves and your fellow human beings,” tweeted Alexander van der Bellen. “Many thanks to the Austrian Armed Forces, Red Cross, Mountain and Water Rescue, Fire Brigade and Police for their efforts.”

Several people stranded at home had to be airlifted to safety.

Treffen Mayor Gerald Ebner said 20 homes and farms could not be reached by rescue teams.

“We are trying to get the situation under control somehow,” Ebner told Austrian news agency APA. “Currently we are waiting for heavy equipment from the Austrian Armed Forces, which we urgently need.”

The body of an 82-year-old man was found in a swollen stream on Wednesday afternoon, ORF reported.

A motorist, swept away by masses of water, was still missing. Rescue teams with dogs were searching the area, ORF reported.

A storm on Tuesday evening brought high winds and heavy rain to the area and authorities warned there was a high threat of further landslides amid normally small creeks that turned into rushing streams with rain .

Markus Mueller of the Arriach Volunteer Fire Department told ORF that a main road through the Gegendtal valley to Arriach was also badly damaged.

“It’s completely ripped out in several places,” Mueller said, adding that several neighborhoods in the flooded area had no electricity or drinking water, and cell phone reception and landline connections were down in some places.

Emergency services, residents and many volunteers have been busy since the early morning hours clearing mud from basements, garages and ground floors, ORF reported.
