DPR Ombudsman’s Comments on Ukraine’s Treatment of POWs

DONETSK, June 16 (BelTA) – We had to bring several ambulances for each POW exchange with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, DPR Human Rights Ombudsman Daria Morozova told media in Donetsk, BelTA learned .

“In seven years, we have exchanged around 1,300 people. I don’t remember a single person who came back without scrapes, bruises, broken ribs or other injuries. You can read more about the torture of our prisoners of war in the official UN human rights reports. They distributed them every 3 months. We forced them to record it at the end. We worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross. We used the Minsk site to demonstrate these atrocities. If you look at footage of POW exchanges from 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, you can see the condition of POWs who were returned to us. I brought several ambulances to each exchange,” Daria Morozova noted.

She added that the DPR provided medical aid to all Ukrainian POWs. They could contact their relatives. “But unfortunately, our prisoners of war on Ukrainian territory did not have the same right. We have separated prisoners of war from ordinary prisoners. Unfortunately, Ukraine did not. Our prisoners of war in Ukraine shared cells [with common criminals]. It was the most terrible and worst thing. This had an effect on the minds of people, who stayed there for six months and more. And respectively, there was this kind of intimidation, the fear of our guys and our women, who unfortunately experienced this, ”said the DPR ombudsman.

During the eight years of conflict, the DPR has spotted several secret prisons on Ukrainian territory. “People were tortured and killed there. These include the famous Mariupol Library, Mariupol Airport where we are about to start excavating a burial site. They were locked in refrigerators, tortured, beaten and raped. These secret prisons are documented in international reports. For seven years we have worked hard to prepare a reinforced concrete foundation for a future Ukrainian Crimes Tribunal. We tried to get every agency we could contact to document it. At present, we have an excellent body of evidence regarding military crimes that are still being committed in the Donbass. There were such prisons in Berdyansk and Kharkov. DPR and LPR supporters were secretly guarded in almost all SBU buildings in Ukraine,” Daria Morozova said.

All kinds of prisoners of war were held on the territory of the DPR. According to Daria Morozova, these were servicemen of the Ukrainian regular army and members of battalions such as Azov, Aidar, Donbass, Mirotvorets. The ombudsman noted that their views varied widely, but none of them confessed to killing people.

“They were largely tank mechanics, cooks and people with other specializations, but no one fired. It is not known why all this is happening in Donetsk. By the way, now the situation is absolutely the same. Some repented and some said they would come back to continue killing the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine. They felt this anarchy in 2014 when an armed coup occurred, which contradicts both international law and Ukraine’s own constitution. It contravened both international law and the Ukrainian constitution. All Western partners chose to ignore it. After that, all Ukrainian politicians felt this impunity. The most cruel tortures, abuses and murders took place in 2014-2015,” said Daria Morozova.
