How to Claim FEMA Relief for Storm Damaged Wells, Septic Tanks, Personal Property


Residents of Buncombe, Haywood and Transylvania counties who have lost access to water through their private wells or suffered damage to their septic system from Tropical Storm Fred may be eligible for financial assistance under the program. FEMA Individual and Household Program.

What kind of help is available? Below is the information provided by FEMA:

For private wells and septic systems, FEMA may provide assistance or reimbursement for the cost of an estimate from a licensed professional technician for the repair or replacement of these items.

WHAT DOCUMENTS FEMA NEEDS TO VERIFY HOME OWNERSHIP, OCCUPANCY FOR DISASTER RELIEF

You may also receive assistance with the actual cost of repairing or replacing those items which are generally not covered by home insurance.

If you have requested FEMA assistance and have not done an inspection of your home, you should call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. At the time of your inspection, notify the FEMA inspector that you have a private well and / or septic tank that may have been damaged by the storm.

If it is determined that the damage is caused by the disaster, you may be eligible for FEMA assistance.

If you have already undergone an inspection and damage to the well or septic tank has not been reported, contact the FEMA Hotline for instructions on how to modify your claim.

FEDERAL FLOOD ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR WNC – WHAT NOW?

Additionally, if your personal property was damaged or destroyed by Tropical Storm Fred, FEMA may provide you with financial assistance under the Other Assistance Needs provision of the program for individuals and households.

Aid is intended to meet basic household needs, not to restore all personal belongings to pre-disaster condition.

FEMA assistance in repairing and replacing personal property falls into the following categories:

  • Appliances: Includes standard household appliances, such as refrigerator, washing machine, etc.
  • Clothes: Essential clothing required due to overall loss, damage or contamination.
  • Room layout: Standard furniture found in a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room.
  • Essential tools: Tools and equipment required by an employer as a condition of employment and items required as a condition of the education of a candidate or member of the household.
  • Accessible articles: FEMA also provides assistance for damaged personal items required for qualified disabled applicants.

Applicants must meet the following conditions to benefit from Personal Property Assistance:

  • Item must be repaired or replaced due to damage caused by disaster.
  • The occupants of the household have an unmet disaster-related need for the damaged item. FEMA may not provide assistance if the applicant can meet this need with another similar item in their possession or available to the household.
  • The item was owned and used by the occupants of the household.

FEMA does not provide assistance for furniture and / or appliances supplied by an owner.

Items used by guests and relatives who were not members of the household before the disaster are not eligible for assistance.
