Central Darfur State was created in 2012 and was formerly part of West Darfur State. It borders the states of West Darfur, North Darfur and Central Darfur and shares international borders with Chad and the Central African Republic. Its capital is the city of Zalingei. In the northeast of the state are the localities of North Jabal Marrah, Central Jabal Marrah and West Jabal Marrah. Access to the three localities of Jebel Marrah remained restricted by the government of Sudan until 2019, when several humanitarian missions were carried out in areas under the control of the Sudan Liberation Army – Abdel Wahid (SLA-AW ). The state witnessed conflict between government forces and SLA/AW in the localities of Jabal Marrah; conflict between SLA splinter groups, divided between those who support the Juba Peace Agreement (JPA) and those who oppose it; and conflicts between pastoralist and farming communities. According to the third round of mobility tracking by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there are 23 IDP camps and 10 neighborhoods in the state hosting IDPs.
New displacements from Jabal Marrah, protracted displacements and lack of durable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to insecurity and insufficient basic services in areas of return are the main drivers of humanitarian needs in Central Darfur. 0Unilateral ceasefires and a significant reduction in armed conflict have led to improved security and the opening of more areas of Jabal Marrah to humanitarian organisations. In these newly accessible areas, humanitarian organizations were able to visit, conduct assessments and implement humanitarian programs. However, the Kwila area in West Jabal Marrah is the only area under SLA-AW control which is currently difficult to access due to poor road conditions and lack of agreement between the two parties in conflict to grant humanitarian access.
