Without Fourth Stimulus Check From Federal Government, These States Pay COVID Cash

Don’t bother hoping for a fourth pandemic congressional stimulus check. Although many Americans, including more than 2.95 million petition signatories, arguing for more help, lawmakers have moved on to debate infrastructure and other issues.

But a number of states have stepped in to provide cash to ease financial strain on residents. In fact, the country’s largest state is sending out another batch of hundreds of thousands of stimulus checks this week, and the country’s easternmost state has just started its own round of relief payments.

Here are six states that currently provide money to help people meet household expenses or pay off the debt that the financial fallout from the pandemic persist.

California’s second round of stimulus has been underway since late August, when Gov. Gavin Newsom (pictured) told taxpayers in a video message to “be careful with checks either in your mailbox or straight in your mailbox. account”.

Payments are always made in waves; the distribution of a new batch is in progress. About 34,000 direct deposits were paid on Friday and about 750,000 paper checks began mailing on Monday, the California Franchise Tax Board told multiple media outlets.

Californians earning $ 75,000 or less receive $ 500 to $ 1,100; you get a higher amount if you have dependents and you don’t qualify for a first round stimulus check at the start of this year. These went to people earning $ 30,000 or less.

Some states have made direct payments using assistance provided to state and local governments in the massive COVID-19 stimulus bill that President Joe Biden signed in March. But not California, which instead used a huge state budget surplus created by the rising stock market and other factors.

Across the country, Maine this week began sending “disaster relief” payments of $ 285 to its workers. Checks will be issued until the end of the year to taxpayers who had adjusted gross income of $ 75,000 in 2020 ($ 150,000 for couples filing jointly).

“I hope this will help Maine families to some extent during the holiday season as we work to fully recover our economy,” Gov. Janet Mills said in a statement.

In recognition of the special challenges teachers faced as they journeyed through the pandemic, Florida distributed $ 1,000 checks to its educators.

The Sunshine State also pays first responders – including law enforcement officers, paramedics, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and firefighters – up to $ 1,000 as a thank you for the sacrifices. that they agreed to throughout the crisis.

New Mexico

The New Mexico Stimulus Program spent $ 5 million helping low-income residents who were not eligible for federal stimulus checks. In August, more than 4,000 households received up to $ 750 in emergency financial assistance, but the state still had $ 1.4 million in its relief pot.

So, for 10 days in October, New Mexico officials accepted requests for a second round of aid, targeting residents who were not eligible for federal stimulus checks and received no money from the l ‘State during the summer. The state has not specified when the new checks will be issued.

A bill passed by the Tennessee state legislature earlier this year will offer teachers a risk premium for weathering the worst of the pandemic.

Lawmakers originally proposed a 2% increase for educators, but it was eventually replaced with a one-time payment of $ 1,000 for full-time teachers. Part-time employees will receive $ 500. Checks are expected to be mailed by the end of 2021.

While there is no statewide program for COVID relief payments in Texas, some local school districts are providing their employees with stimulus checks in the form of retention bonuses.

In the Irving suburb of Dallas, the bonus can reach $ 2,000. In neighboring Denton, teachers will receive $ 500 and a 2% pay rise. Several Texas school districts approved pay increases for educators in the place of direct payments.

If you need more help but your state doesn’t offer stimulus checks, you’ll have to find new relief on your own.

  • Manage your debt. Credit is convenient, but it doesn’t take long before the high interest catches up with you. If you’re juggling multiple credit card balances and other high interest debt, put them together into one single debt consolidation loan to pay off what you owe faster and more cheaply.

  • Lower your insurance bills. If you haven’t looked for a better rate on your auto insurance lately, you could be paying hundreds of dollars too much each year, especially if you work from home and drive less. A little comparative shopping might reduce your automobile premiums.

  • Stretch every dollar. Can you give up subscription services you don’t use? Can you downgrade your phone plan to save a few dollars each month? And finally, are you getting the best deals when you shop online? If you are not sure of the latter, try using a free browser add-on that automatically scans the internet for better prices and coupons.

  • Turn your money into a wallet. Make money on the stock market even if you don’t have a lot of money to gamble or don’t have a lot of investing experience. Popular app can help you invest simply “spare currency” for daily purchases – and turn your pennies into a diversified portfolio.
