That’s when this year’s Jefferson County Media Day blood drive is scheduled to be held at the St. Florian Event Center in Wintersville. Doors will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and we hope everyone who is eligible will participate in the annual event.
Late spring and early summer often bring a need for blood that sometimes goes unmet. Regular donors may be on vacation or involved in other activities that take them away from donation centers. That said, the need for blood does not go away. People will be injured in accidents; some might need emergency surgeries; and still others might need potentially life-saving scheduled surgeries for cancer or other medical conditions.
Wednesday’s campaign aims to collect 44 units, American Red Cross officials from the Ohio River Valley chapter said. To reach this total, they must have at least 55 donors. A Power Red collection, which collects red blood cells, will be available on Wednesday. This option has an additional benefit for recipients of frequent transfusions.
Appointments are encouraged — by calling (800) 733-2767 or visiting RedCrossBlood.org and entering JeffMedia — but dates will be accepted, officials noted. All donors will receive a $10 gift card on Wednesday, courtesy of Suburban Propane, and everyone who donates blood at American Red Cross blood drives this month will be entered into a raffle to win a trip to Graceland to celebrate the release of Baz Luhrmann’s new film, “Elvis”.
The donation process is simple – all you need to do is complete a questionnaire and pass a simple health check. The trained professionals who take donations make blood donation quick, painless and effortless on the part of the donor.
